The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the 2025 Champions Trophy will be held under a hybrid hosting model. This decision follows extensive discussions and allows India to play all of their matches in Dubai, with the remaining fixtures being split between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The agreement was reached during an informal ICC members’ meeting, chaired by Jay Shah, at the ICC headquarters in Dubai. This decision is a key step in addressing the complex geopolitical challenges between India and Pakistan.
Background: PCB’s Proposal and BCCI’s Agreement
The hybrid model was initially proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to preserve its hosting rights for the tournament. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was initially resistant, they eventually agreed to the arrangement, provided that the same model would be applied to ICC events held in India through 2027.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that fairness should be the priority in cricket governance. “Cricket should win, that’s most important, but with respect for all. We are going to do what’s best for cricket,” Naqvi said following the meeting.
Impact on Future ICC Tournaments
The hybrid model will also apply to future ICC events. For the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, Pakistan’s matches will be held in Sri Lanka. Similarly, during the 2025 Women’s World Cup, Pakistan’s matches will be played at a neutral venue.
This arrangement demonstrates a broader effort to ensure the smooth operation of ICC tournaments, balancing both political and cricketing considerations. An ICC source noted, “It’s a win-win situation for all stakeholders.”
Delays and Challenges in Finalizing the Schedule
The uncertainty surrounding the hosting model caused significant delays in finalizing the Champions Trophy schedule. Under the terms of the ICC’s broadcasting contract, the schedule should have been released 90 days in advance, but that deadline has passed. However, with the hosting issue now resolved, the schedule is expected to be announced soon.
Representatives from Star Sports, the official broadcaster, were in Dubai to discuss operational details, with a follow-up meeting with ICC officials scheduled for this weekend.
Fan Reactions and Anticipation for the Champions Trophy
The announcement of the hybrid model has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While some view it as a pragmatic solution to the geopolitical issues, others have expressed concerns over the logistical challenges it may present. Despite this, excitement for the Champions Trophy remains high, especially with the prospect of an India-Pakistan match, a fixture that has historically been one of the tournament’s most anticipated moments.
The Champions Trophy, returning after eight years, is expected to offer thrilling cricket action and intense rivalries on the global stage. Fans are eagerly awaiting the final schedule and team line-ups.
