Sri Lanka Sensation Kamindu Mendis Sets World Record, Beats Sunil Gavaskar And Don Bradman: The sensation of Sri Lanka, Kamindu Mendis, is a talented and expert batsman of the team. On Thursday, the Asian batsman got his name written in the history with his astounding performance in the groun.
Kamindu Mendis has now become the first-ever batsman to score fifty or more in eight consecutive Test matches since his debut in the Sri Lankan team.
On the other hand, the popular Viv Richard holds the record for the most consecutive Test matches with a fifty, accomplishing his goal with 11 matches.
The historical event took place during the second match against New Zealand at Galle International Stadium on Thursday.
The stylish left-hander achieved this remarkable milestone and left everybody in awe of him. Batting at number five, the talented batsman once again showed his exceptional batting skills, notching up his fifth half-century in Test cricket.
In the first innings of the test match, the Sri Lankan team had a shaky start. However, with Mendis’s achievement, the team got its morale back. After captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and chose to bat, Sri Lanka’s first innings suffered a setback with Pathum Nissanka dismissed immediately.
Thankfully, veteran campaigners Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne steadied the innings with a crucial 122-run partnership for the second wicket.
Karunaratne’s unfortunate run out provided New Zealand with a breakthrough, but Chandimal continued his fine form to bring up a century before being dismissed.
After the arrival of Kamindu Mendis at the pitch, Sri Lanka’s position got solidified. Alongside Angelo Matthews, Mendis guided the team past the 300-mark, scoring a sublime 51* by the end of day one, with Sri Lanka finishing on 306 for three.
Mendis’s excellent consistency throughout his career has been the defining factor in his game. He started with his fifty against Australia in Galle in 2022, followed by awe-inspiring scores against England and Bangladesh earlier in 2024.
