Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support iPhones running iOS versions older than 15.1. This means that users with older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, will no longer be able to use the popular messaging app on their devices.
Currently, WhatsApp supports devices running Android 5.0 and later, as well as iPhones running iOS 12 and higher. However, in an effort to keep up with the latest technological advancements, WhatsApp will phase out support for older operating systems. Android users will not be impacted by this change and can continue using WhatsApp as usual.
Users with newer iPhone models, capable of upgrading to iOS 15.1 or later, will still be able to access the app as long as they have the latest software updates installed.
WhatsApp explained that this update is designed to improve the app’s performance, ensuring it stays compatible with the newest mobile technology. The platform’s official website mentions that discontinuing support for older devices will allow WhatsApp to focus on maintaining compatibility with modern systems and keep up with technological advancements.
What to do if your operating system is no longer supported
If you’re using a device that will be affected by this change, you will need to either upgrade to a newer iPhone or update to the latest available iOS version (if possible) to continue using WhatsApp after May 2025.
WhatsApp has stated that users will be notified multiple times within the app before support for older operating systems ends. For those with newer iPhones, even if you’re on an older iOS version, you will still be able to update to the latest iOS release and continue using WhatsApp once the change is implemented. To update, go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone.
WhatsApp’s Device Compatibility
As technology evolves rapidly, WhatsApp frequently reviews and updates the operating systems it supports. According to its website, WhatsApp focuses on devices with the fewest users, which may lack the latest security updates or necessary functionality to run the app.
WhatsApp remains compatible with a wide range of Android devices running Android 5.0 or newer, as well as Android phones that can receive SMS messages or calls. On iOS, the app works on iPhones running iOS 12 or higher, including those that can receive SMS messages or calls.
For the best WhatsApp experience, iPhone users are encouraged to use the latest version of iOS and avoid jailbroken or unlocked devices, as WhatsApp does not support modified versions of the iPhone operating system.
